Denise, a Portuguese/ American who came to Portugal for a career as a musician in the world renowned Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, dreamed of having a place in nature to develop and share a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. She studied organic and permaculture principles, invested in solar energy and a fully electric car and started the transformation of the sandy hectare of scrubland and abandoned greenhouses. The first image below shows an aerial view of the plot in 2007 after clearing the rubble of the greenhouses but before much work had begun on it. The white rectangular outline is the start of the natural swimming pool, and the small, dark green dot in the middle was the only tree, apart from the pines at the edge of the property.
Sustainable Ecology Creation through Permaculture Principles
In 2007 work began creating a healthy biodiverse ecosystem on the abandoned farm land, where parts of the old brick greenhouses can still be seen. Rubble, plastic and glass were strewn about the land. The first major project involved building a "Natural" Swimming pool that would also encourage wildlife and be a source of water for plants around its vicinity. All this time landscaping and planting trees was a constant, particularly leguminous "pioneer" plants that add nitrogen to the soil. A lot of work was required, including bringing copious amounts of leaves, manure and other organic material to the completly sand based land.
Sustainability teaching and Courses
At Quinta Ecosophia, we welcome student visits, as individuals or school groups, to learn about sustainable energy, alternative construction techniques, permaculture and organic gardening. Hands on experience with animals, in the garden and in building projects are possibilities. Above all, an appreciation and respect for nature is encouraged.
We have a large wooden yoga/events pavilion for both regular classes and retreats.
